How to be a better child to your parents.

Have you ever thought about the kind of child that you are to your parents? Are you bringing them joy, or you’re making them lament in their old age? Here is a post to encourage you to do your best for them, because there’s no better gift you can give to them and ultimately, yourself! God cannot give you something bigger if you have not been faithful with what He’s given you. Have you been a good child to your parents? Do you support them financially and spiritually? Are you an obedient and caring child? Do you keep in touch? Call them, text them?

The bible says honor your father and your mother so that your days will be long. That’s the only commandment with a promise. Take it seriously and the Lord will come through for you. Even when you don't have earthly parents, think about the people in your life who have held your hands and guided you through the rough times. They could be mentors, legal guardians, spiritual guardians, or even older friends!

Do for them what you would like them to do for you, if the roles were reversed!

Here are a few ways in which we can be better children to our parents:

1. Stay in touch. Aside the fact that some people are generally bad at keeping in touch, the problem, I think, comes when people have no relationship with their parents. I get it, people have different personalities, but there are some children who simply cannot maintain a conversation with their parents. If you’re one of them, please change your ways. Even if a phone call is too stressful for you, a text once in awhile will suffice. Some cheesy ones can be a happy new month, sending funny or interesting articles, or memorable events like religious and political celebrations.

2. Respect and Obedience. I understand that we are of a different generation from our parents, but inasmuch as we may not always understand why they have certain regulations, we have to respect them. Respectfully express yourself to your parents. Nothing breaks the heart of those who have invested so much, and given so much, than disrespect. We can never imagine the sacrifices that have been made for us to become the people who we are today, so they best we can do is to make our parents grow old in joy.

3. Gifts and Financial Support. Don’t underestimate what you have to give. A single prayer from your parents goes a long way in bringing you to your own destiny. And a simple heartfelt gift can trigger that prayer like never before! Remember that Jacob blessed Ephraim, the younger son of Joseph, and Ephraim eventually became greater than his brother. That was because of his grandfather’s blessings over his life! Joseph’s life was so blessed by his father (and his father) that even his children were very great! What a blessing! What a wow!

That's it for today friends! It's a short post but I hope it goes a long way to making us better people, especially better children!
