The Miracle of Belief

Hello friends, I read this devotional this morning, while I was trying to decide to leave my bed. I’m such a non-morning person that I need a few minutes to come to terms with the fact that dawn has broken, and then prepare for my day. I have friends who open their eyes and scream in joy and excitement every morning and I cannot handle the noise omg! I’m always like please don’t startle me awake! Anyway, this devotional was interesting and I would love to hear from thoughts on it. I clearly miss my bible study, where I could discuss these things with friends, but oh well, we’ll just make do with the blog. :D

The Miracle of Belief

My speech and my preaching was not with enticing words. — 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Paul was a scholar and an orator of the first rank; he is not speaking out of abject humility; but saying that he would veil the power of God if, when he preached the gospel, he impressed people with his “excellency of speech.” Belief in Jesus is a miracle produced only by the efficacy of Redemption, not by impressiveness of speech, not by wooing and winning, but by the sheer unaided power of God.

Hmmn, I get that. I completely agree that we need not be worried about the power in our writing, our preaching, or even examples, and how these will turn people to Christ. This is very important with regards for preachers and teachers. You may have a command of the language, and an understanding mind. But never preach to people with the objective of impressing them and gaining attention or followership. It always must be about God. He should be the beginning, ending, and complete focus of your work.

The creative power of the Redemption comes through the preaching of the Gospel, but never because of the personality of the preacher. The real fasting of the preacher is not from food, but rather from eloquence, from impressiveness and exquisite diction, from everything that might hinder the gospel of God being presented.

Even as this has been stated, there still is a place for an excellent spirit. Don’t decide to not study the word, because you know, there’s no point because you don’t have to impress others. Don’t decide to “freestyle” speaking engagements, or teaching, because the inspiration is all going to come from the Holy Spirit. It will come from Him, but laziness and disregard for the work of God also are sins, just like pride.

The preacher is there as the representative of God — “as though God did beseech you by us.” He is there to present the Gospel of God. If it is only because of my preaching that people desire to be better, they will never get anywhere near Jesus Christ. Anything that flatters me in my preaching of the Gospel will end in making me a traitor to Jesus; I prevent the creative power of His Redemption from doing its work.

“I, if I be lifted up…, will draw all men unto Me.”

Till next time, have a wonderful day and week ahead.
